How to Read More

One of the biggest struggles any reader faces is how to read more. There’s an endless pile of books you want to read, but you never seem to find enough time to read. Here are five tips to help you read more:

  1. Find a genre you love! And don’t be afraid to jump around…
    • There are so many different types of books to read: classics, fantasy, mystery, romance, etc. The list goes on and on. Find want you love to read and stick to that genre first. But, don’t be afraid to try other genres too! Within the next few weeks I’ll be sharing more about different genres with a recommended book list for each (kind of like my rom-com post two weeks ago), so stay tuned!
  2. You make time for what you want to make time for!
    • Schedule reading into your day! I tend to enjoy reading right before bed, so I make sure the rest of my to do list is completed so that at a certain time I know I can crawl into bed and read my book.
  3. Replace meaningless activities with a few minutes of reading!
    • This was my biggest issue…I realized I had replaced reading with doomscrolling (endless scrolling on my phone). So, I made an effort to schedule in time to read during the day.
  4. Find accountability!
    • Join a book club or a reading group! Start a Goodreads account! Share your reading progress with a friend! One thing my friend Terryn and I do is that each day we share what we’re reading. I know this helps me get excited to read more as I share my progress with her.
  5. Always know that there are seasons for everything!
    • When I first started college, I was busy with homework, social events, and other activities, so I hardly read! There will be times in life when it’s harder to read. You might have kiddos running around pulling out your bookmarks from your books on your nightstand or you might have a big project at work that needs your extra attention. During some seasons, it will be easy to curl up and read fifty pages at a time, but some seasons it may just be a few sentences at a time and that’s okay!

Let me know if you plan to try one of these tips or if you have a tip that helps you read more that I didn’t list!

Happy reading!
